This series of new paintings by Susi Hochstrasser again includes people and portraits. As in her former EVERYDAY SCENES, they appear in new themes of HEADS & HEADSCAPES or STORY-LINES, sometimes in a humorous way and other times with a sad touch.
The media she chooses are oil paint, oil sticks, crayons, mylar or paper cuts on her former handprints. The paintings are done in layers: painted, rolled, scratched and/or worked over with collage and drawings. Susi Hochstrasser wants some of the traces of former layers to be seen. The whole process is flowing from her subconscious and results in stories in layers and lines. The variety of materials and wealth of colors express emotion and energy. Her rich artistic expression is evident by the choice of her palette and her pleasure and sense of putting unusual color shades next to one another.
The figures and portraits of unknown or known people (as well as self-portraits) and/or their profiles – combined with writings, scripts and drawings – result in “stories”… stories from memories and dreams, etc. Her openness towards people of different cultures, her swift attentiveness in her everyday life and her many travels flow into her paintings and influence her artistic creativity.
It is important to Susi Hochstrasser for the viewer to make his or her own interpretation of her paintings and/or to be willing to read the silent sadness in some works and joy and humor in other paintings. |
